Asus sorgt für Schlagzeilen, das lässt sich nicht verleugnen, kam man erst mit schlechtem GPS Empfang in die Kritik, weitete sich die Diskussion schnell auf den geschlossenen und verschlüsselten Bootloader der Transformer Prime Tablets aus.
Die Reaktionen waren ausufernd, der Protest durchaus spürbar (inklusive Onlinepetition usw.), dabei geht Asus den gleichen Weg, den man schon beim Vorgänger Transformer einschlug.
Das Blatt hat sich mittlerweile gewendet, denn Asus nahm gestern Abend auf der offiziellen Facebook Fanpage zu den ganzen Fragen Stellung:

In addition, we would like to address your concerns related to GPS and bootloader on the Transformer Prime.
The ASUS Transformer Prime is made from a metallic unibody design, so the material may affect the performance of the GPS when receiving signals from satellites. Please note that this product is not a professional GPS device, and signal performance can be easily influenced by factors including, but not limited to: weather, buildings, and surrounding environments. Please understand there are limitations when using the GPS function. To avoid inconveniencing users who demand a powerful GPS device, we made the decision to remove it from our specification sheet and marketing communications. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.
Regarding the bootloader, the reason we chose to lock it is due to content providers‘ requirement for DRM client devices to be as secure as possible. ASUS supports Google DRM in order to provide users with a high quality video rental experience. Also, based on our experience, users who choose to root their devices risk breaking the system completely. However, we know there is demand in the modding community to have an unlocked bootloader. Therefore, ASUS is developing an unlock tool for that community. Please do note that if you choose to unlock your device, the ASUS warranty will be void, and Google video rental will also be unavailable because the device will be no longer protected by security mechanism.

Fangen wir vorne an: Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich findet seinen Weg auf die Asus Transformer Prime Tablets ab dem 12. Januar 2012 und wird, wie gewohnt, mittels OTA-Update (Over the Air) auf die Geräte verteilt.
Der mangelhafte GPS Empfang wird mit dem Metallgehäuse des Transformer Primes entschuldigt und es wird darauf hingewiesen, dass man hier keine Besserung über Update erreichen könnte, man wäre dazu übergegangen die GPS Funktionalität aus den Spezifikationen zu entfernen und damit nicht weiter zu werben. Das Transformer Prime sei ohnehin nicht auf erstklassigen GPS Empfang ausgerichtet gewesen, hierfür seien andere Geräte auf dem Market besser geeignet.
Eine Erklärung zum Bootloader liefert man ebenfalls mit: Aufgrund von Vorgaben durch Partnerunternehmen, die DRM geschützte Inhalte anbieten, sei man dazu verpflichtet die Geräte so gut wie möglich abzusichern und habe deshalb diesen Weg eingeschlagen. Man werde allerdings eine Möglichkeit anbieten den Bootloader zu entsperren und ein entsprechendes Tool an die Community weiterreichen. Mit Entsperrung des Bootloaders verzichte man allerdings auf seinen Garantieanspruch und DRM nutzende Dienste, wie Googles Video Rental (bisher US only), würden anschliessend nicht mehr funktionieren.
Alles in allem durchaus positive Meldungen, mit denen sich Asus ganz sicher erstmal wieder aus dem Fokus rücken kann.
